ACTIVE RELEASE TECHNIQUES® (ART)

What is Active Release Techniques® (ART):
ART is a movement-based massage system, which is extremely useful for accurately locating the cause of soft tissue discomforts that affect muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves and is renowned for resolving (or greatly reducing) these discomforts quickly and durably.

What is it used for?

Whether due to pulls, tears, collisions, etc. (strains & sprains), or the accumulation of small tears (micro-trauma), or not getting enough oxygen (hypoxia) as a result of over-training, each of these factors can cause your body to produce tough, dense scar tissue. As scar tissue builds up, it ties down tissues that need to move freely and so muscles lose the ability to lengthen, tendons cannot slide easily, ligaments become restricted, and nerves can become trapped. All these can reduce strength and range of motion as well as cause pain. If a nerve is trapped you may also feel tingling, numbness, or cold.
ART is used to reduce this scar tissue and its resultant discomforts in order to restore optimal, healthy functioning to the individual.

What conditions can benefit from receiving ART?
Neck, back and shoulder pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, knee problems, and tennis elbow are just a few of the many conditions that can be resolved quickly and often permanently with ART.

Who uses it?

Athletes from nearly all professional and amateur sports, professional dancers, national jiu-jitsu champions, weekend warriors and active people from any walk of life who have been injured or want to stay in top condition use it. Locally, the Broncos, the Nuggets, and the Rockies all have ART providers on staff. Some of the famous athletes that rely on ART treatments include footballers Peyton Manning and Bill Romanowski, hockey players Gary Roberts and Olympic gold medalist Brendan Morrow, Mr. Olympia winners Jay Cutler and Dorian Yates, and many others.

What is a session like?

Every ART session is actually a combination of examination and treatment and it allows providers to identify and correct the specific problems that are affecting each individual patient.
First the provider listens to the client's issues and assesses their movement to understand what causes the discomfort. Second there is a provider's hands-on palpation to assess tissue tension, texture, and movement of the muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves that are involved. Once the cause of the discomfort is identified, the tissues are treated by combining very precisely directed pressure through technical hands-on touch ('tension to the tissue') along with precise movements performed together by the client and the provider. A detailed record is made of exactly which tissues were treated that most alleviated the client's condition so that follow-up sessions are provided with great efficiency.

Professional bodybuider Jose Raymond gives a great answer:
"ART is very beneficial and very different from standard deep-tissue. The key difference is movement. They are moving you around, and you are asked to do specific movements as they dig into you. They get much deeper than deep-tissue and work on different areas, reaching under your scapula, for example. The goal of ART is to increase your range of motion and decrease chronic pain in areas like your joints. To stimulate the muscle 100 percent from origin to insertion, you really do need a full range of motion and ART can definitely help you get that back if you’ve lost it, which most of us who have been training hard for years have."
